Even if you never watch TV, you’ll still see ads on your phone for everything from clothing to cookies, and both kinds of ads can leave you feeling bad about yourself. Of course, you want to look good, especially when it comes to your Quinceanera. But “looking good” is a lot more than the size label in your jeans—or your Quinceanera dress. It’s also not about looking like teeny tiny Arianna Grande or dancer Jennifer Lopez. It does have to do with making teeny tiny changes so you can be healthy, eat smart, and be the best you possible. So let’s talk about some simple—and practical—things you can do now as you prepare for your Quince that will serve you very well for the rest of your life.

1. Get Real About Your Size

Have you see the post in Women’s Health of the woman in 6 totally different sizes that all fit her just the same? She’s a counselor for teen and pre-teens and every day she hears things like girls asking if the boyfriend would have stayed if she were skinnier. That’s terribly sad, and we don’t want you falling into that trap.

The good news is that, when you shop for your Quinceanera gown, the “sample size” you try on will have nothing whatsoever to do with the real size of the dress once it’s altered. It probably won’t even have a size tag!

By the way, you can read that post about the pant sizes in two different places (and we highly recommend it!):

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DeenaShoemaker/posts/10211469655803883

Women’s Health: http://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/pant-sizes

2. Ask your Folks to Help

A Latino diet is usually heavy on carbs, particularly beans and rice. Neither of those will make you heavy if you watch the portions and if you go easy on the corn and wheat in tortillas and tacos. (Have you ever thought to eat the filling alone without the wrapper? Try it!) But there are other foods that are better for you that you might need to ask your mom to buy at the store.

You can also ask for a little section of the fridge and kitchen that’s “yours” like the back corner of one shelf in the fridge and a basket of healthy treats somewhere in the kitchen like a cupboard or maybe even on top of the fridge.

3. Research What’s Right

It’s pretty much common sense to have an apple instead of a bag of chips, but there are a lot of quick foods that are good for you. If you know in advance what the better choice is, it’s easier to make it.

Here’s a terrific article on 18 healthy snacks—and a lot of them are portable for your purse or packable in an insulated lunch box: http://lindseyreviews.com/18-best-snacks-for-weight-loss/

4. Empty the Cupboard of Empty Calories

Again, we’re talking about your part of the cupboard—whatever you can control. You can’t insist that your mom not buy cookies and sweet cereal for your siblings, but you can ask her not to buy them for you.

You might already know, but “empty calories” refers to things that have calories but very little nutrition. Classic empty calorie foods are soda, chips of any kind, cookies, candy, cake and (sorry) french fries.

 • Warning: Dont’ think that switching to diet soda and “low-cal” or “low-fat” snacks will solve the long term healthy weight issue. It’s been proven that the artificial sweeteners in diet soda can mess up your metabolism and over time can make you gain weight. Also, with the so-called low-cal and low-fat foods, there are things in there that your body won’t know how to use as food, so you’ll end up eating more. You might lose a few pounds right away, but in the long run, anything artificial will hurt your metabolism.

5. Restock with the Good Stuff

Once you’ve dumped your part of the cupboard—or at least put some blinders on so you don’t see what’s there that your kid brother can scarf down without gaining an ounce—you’ll need to have things on hand that are healthy.

Referring back to that article above (18-best-snacks-for-weight-loss) some things that you can keep in your purse or backpack are walnuts, Wheat Thins, kale chips and (believe it or not) Cheerios. Good stuff for your lunch and to keep in your section of the fridge include Greek yogurt, grapes, apples and cheese

6. Be Careful with Quick Fixes

Just because you choose “juice” instead of soda in the school cafeteria or on the run does not mean you’ve chosen more wisely. Learn to read labels and, again, get educated. For instance, some “healthy” teas and juices in have as many calories—and sometimes just as much sugar or worse, the dreaded high fructose corn syrup—as that can of soda you didn’t buy.

One thing that’s almost a sure bet is a small bottle of milk or a veggie drink like V8. Milk has protein, and while V8 can be a little salty, the calorie count is great for the quantity. Stay away from the fruit smoothies altogether if you want to watch calories, and read the labels on the veggie smoothies. Some have just as much fruit as greens, but some are really packed well with greens and just enough fruit to make them taste good. The true veggie smoothies are fabulous for both your taste buds and your waistline.

7. Fresh Veggies vs. Anything in a Bag

Did you know that nutritionists say to eat at least 10% of your daily food as fresh veggies? They’re also easy to pack when you’re planning to snack at places like the movies. Just take a baggie filled with baby carrots, celery sticks, and cherry tomatoes.

Not that into veggies, but you’ll eat them with a dip? Go for it—just make the dip something healthy like Greek yogurt veggie dip for just about anything and use fresh ground peanut butter on celery sticks.

You can also get a cream cheese blend with Greek yogurt mixed into the cream cheese. Add some flavoring like onion soup mix, and you’ve got a great dip that’s also got protein (the Greek yogurt/cream cheese mix has 4 grams of protein in a serving).

If you don’t like peanut butter or for some reason, peanuts tend to plump you up, then get almond butter.

8. Eat Just a Little Less

“If you want to grow thinner, diminish your dinner.” That’s an old quote by H.S. Leigh. But how do you do this? There are a bunch of ways:

 • Use a salad plate: Instead of a dinner plate at home or at a buffet restaurant, instead put your dinner portions on a salad plate.
 • Eat slower: You might think you’ll slow down the others or make them wait around for you to finish, but if you take a smaller portion of everything, it’ll work out evenly.
 • Chew every bite—a lot: There are different “rules” out there, but the basic thing is to actually chew your food and not have just a couple of chomps then swallow and on to the next mouthful.
 • Quit when you’re ¾ full: It takes a little practice, but once you get used to having a not-totally-full stomach, it can feel pretty good.
 • Don’t wear stretchy clothes: Somebody recently did a study that wearing things like yoga clothes and loose clothes (like those comfy jammie pants) can actually result in eating as much as 1000 calories more per day. Now, that does not mean you can’t enjoy an evening in jammies in front of the TV or relaxing. Just don’t snack while wearing those loose pants!
 • Old but True Saying: “Nothing Tastes as Good as Being Thin Feels.” Let’s get sensible and say “Nothing Tastes as Good as Being Healthy Feels. ” Any way you slice it, though, either remark is totally on the mark!

9. Learn to Go Against the Group (politely)

Just because everybody wants to go get a pizza doesn’t mean you can’t go. It just means you choose a side salad before you have the pizza and then have one slice only or just a couple of small squares.

Also, going back to the “chew well” theory, trust us: If you learn to “chew pizza really well” you’ll taste it and won’t need to scarf down a lot more!

10. Choose Home-Cooked Over Eating Out

If you do a search, you’ll find a lot of info on people who have lost a ton of weight just by not eating fast food at all. They actually eat more at home, but because it’s more nutritious and doesn’t have all the preservatives and junk in it, their homemade food doesn’t pack on the pounds.

You can get your friends to do this—with your folks’ help—by having that pizza party at home with a make-your-own-pizza theme. Then you can control the portions plus what goes on your half.

And if your friends want to have high fructose or diet soda, just make the party BYOB—bring your own beverage!

11. Learn to Read Labels

This sounds like a lot of hard work, but it does get easier. Just take the time to look at ingredients lists, and after a while, you’ll get a feel for it. Here are a few tips:

 • Nothing with high fructose corn syrup (that eliminates most sodas plus a lot of other foods are sweetened with this stuff)
 • Nothing with artificial sweeteners (bye-bye diet soda and low-cal junk food)
 • Choose foods with more protein than fat
 • Choose high fiber (when comparing bread, take the one with more grams of fiber per slice)

Tough but True Tip: If you eliminate high fructose corn syrup alone your metabolism will improve. Yes, that means you’ll “totally give up” a lot of stuff—for a little while. After you’ve skipped the high fructose for awhile, you won’t like the taste of things made with it.

You don’t have to starve yourself to maintain a healthy weight or spend every waking hour in the gym or running or whatever, and you don’t have to go vegan to be all-around healthy. Just follow these tips, and you’ll see a lot of improvement in how you feel overall.

Looks matter a lot when it comes to your Quince day. You’ll definitely want to pamper yourself like the princess you are when it comes to make-up and hair. You may already have a huge collection of pins and photos for DIY hairstyle ideas, but have you included any ideas using spin pins? They’re one of the coolest hair tools out there and are super-easy to learn how to use. You can create anything from a “messy bun” to a high-style updo. All it takes is a little creativity, a couple of these handy pins, and some practice!

Just what are Spin Pins anyway?

Spin pins are handy little gadgets that will hold even the finest hair in place. You can get them at your local beauty supply store, at a drugstore with a good hair accessory selection, and you can order them online from eBay and Amazon. They come in different colors to match or contrast with your hair color—black, brown, gold, pink gold, and silver, depending on where you search—and some are available with a built-in accessory like a flower:

… or a pearl:

Basic Technique: the 1-Minute 3-Step Bun

Starting note: You do not need a ponytail holder—just 2 spin pins!

1. Gather your hair into a ponytail then twist it into a bun (the higher the ponytail, the higher the placement of the bun).

2. Insert one spin pin on one side of the bun by twisting the pin clockwise.

3. Insert the 2nd pin directly across but a little off-center from the first pin.

Important: Do not let the pins overlap inside your hair or else they’ll be very stubborn to take out.

To remove the pins: Spin the pins out counter-clockwise—never just tug on them.

Messy Bun:

You can make a messy bun either higher or lower depending on where you start the ponytail.

Here’s the photo tutorial for that lower messy bun:

http://15minutefashion.about.com/od/quickandeasyhairstyles/ss/How-To-Use-A-Spin-Pin.htm?utm_source=pinterest_ip&utm_medium=sm&utm_campaign=shareurlbuttons#step6

Double Chignon:

For this, you’ll need 4 spin pins, but you can see how to do it just from the photo:

 • 1st make the top bun by using the front half of your hair twisted higher on your head.
 • Make 2nd bun from the bottom portion of your hair.

Note: This style works a little better if your hair is thicker. You can also create the buns as close together as you like, then tuck in some flowers or other hair decoration.

Short Hair: Triple Chignon with Flowers:

This style works really well with short hair. Use 2 spin pins per bun and if you need to, add a few bobby pins to hold any errant strands in place.

Here’s the full photo tutorial: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/220394975494947441/

BONUS!: Here’s a list of 21 spin pin hairdos! (We’ll highlight some of our favorites below.)

https://www.buzzfeed.com/peggy/easy-hairstyles-with-spin-pins?sub=3165184_2779125&utm_term=.whODpdlK8#.wxx7385jn

Add a Braid:

Keep one generous strand of hair at the front before you make your ponytail. Gather your hair, pin it into the bun, then create the braid and pin it around.

Split Wrapped Low Chignon:

This is the same idea as the braid, except you’ll keep two strands at the front and then twist and pin them instead of braiding.

You do need one ponytail holder for this, but that’s just to get you started. You’ll still create the starter bun with the spin pin, then use pins to hold the wrapped strands in place.

Hold a Princess ‘Do in Place:

This one is so easy, who needs written instructions?!

Beautiful Messy Side Strand Chignon:

The trick here again is not to gather all the hair into the bun but instead, leave two strands on either side, then wrap them up and over the bun.

Off-Center Side Chignon:

Make Your Own Decorative Spin Pins!

These are just too easy and too pretty! You can make pins to match your Quince theme or just use one color flower or beads. Here’s the tutorial: http://thespohrsaremultiplying.com/hair/diy-jeweled-spin-pins/#axzz4VrOQQoRx

Even if you don’t have a celebratory Mass before your reception, on your Quinceanera, you’re still princess for a day, so you want to look the part. You also want to not only look great in your posed portraits, but you also want to be caught on video looking elegant and ladylike on your first day as a young woman. Here are 9 tips—everything from how to stand up straight to how to butter a dinner roll—that will serve you well on your Quinceanera day and in the years to come!

1. How to Have Near-Perfect Posture

No matter how beautiful your dress, if your shoulders aren’t squared, and your head held high, you’re going to look—well, slumpy in your photos! It’s not difficult to master better posture if you know the right things to do.

 • Easy exercises for better posture

Here’s a link to a great set of exercises to help you square up your shoulders in no time:

http://dailyhealthpost.com/how-to-correct-body-posture/?utm_campaign=ET&utm_content=BadPosture&utm_medium=ET&utm_source=Pinterest&utm_term=FixBadPosture

2. How to Walk in High Heels

No matter the height of your Quinceanera heels, there are a few rules when it comes to walking gracefully. For instance, always walk heel-to-toe just like you would in flats. Then take a tip from runway models by placing one foot front of the other almost in a straight line.

Here are two really helpful guides for walking like a princess in those beautiful new heels:

 • Walk with confidence

Here’s a great tutorial for how to walk in heels including tips if it’s your first time:

 • Strengthen your legs and protect your joints

The great news is, even though these are ballet exercises, there’s no ballet experience required!

3. How to Hold a Bouquet

While most Quinceanera bouquets are rounded nosegays, you might choose something a little different for your flowers. Make sure to ask your florist the best way to hold your flowers but here are some basic guidelines to get you started:

 • Hold the bouquet in a way that it feels most balanced
 • Hold it in front of you at waist level and tipped just slightly forward
 • Shoulders back, stand up straight, chin up, don’t look at the floor
 • Don’t forget to hold the bouquet correctly for photos (your photographer will probably remind you)
 • Fantastic tutorial illustrating a small hand tied bouquet

4. How to Exit a Car with Grace

Getting in and out of a car while wearing a Quinceanera dress with a giant hoop skirt is a challenge. Getting in isn’t so bad because you’ll have your back to the photographer. Getting out is a whole other thing altogether. The big trick is to keep your knees together, rotate on your hipbones, and have someone hold your hand to help you out.

Here’s a darling tutorial that includes “striking a pose”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx6AOl19HBQ

5. How to Cut a Tier Cake

Unless yours is a very small reception and your cake is more like a birthday cake, your caterer or someone else will be responsible for slicing the cake into portions. Either way, you’ll still be responsible for cutting the first piece as a symbol of your young adult status and believe or not, there’s a “correct way” to do this too!

Fun Warning: Watching this video may give you a craving for a chunk of cake now!

 • How to cut a small symbolic slice of tier cake

6. How to Shake Hands, Kiss & Hug Sincerely

Every time you shake someone’s hand, you’re giving an impression, and at your Quinceanera, you’ll want to give the impression that you’re sincere. You’ll also be hugging and kissing family and friends, and believe it or not, there are right and wrong ways to do that!

 • 5 Kinds of Handshakes, The Air Kiss & The Shoulder Hug

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHUAJA2t_NA

7. How to Hold a Microphone

There’s a difference between holding a microphone when you’re singing and when you’re giving a speech. There’s also a natural way to hold your arm so you don’t get tired.

 • Short, sweet and correct microphone technique

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2HCnPC0zOo

8. How to Use the Ladies Room in a Ball Gown

You wouldn’t think you’d need advice on how to use the ladies room—unless you’re wearing a dress that’s almost wider than the doorway! If your Quinceanera gown is 2-piece, it’s probably easy to step out of the skirt for a moment. But if the skirt is attached—sit down “facing forward!”

 • This really does work, girls!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM2ZiW1rUiI

9. How to Butter a Dinner Roll

Would you believe there’s a wrong way to butter and eat a dinner roll? Yep! And it has everything to do with the size of the piece you tear off. As a finishing touch to our Perfect Princess Quinceanera guide, check out this video, then have fun on your big day!

 • This starts with buttering a roll then adds some other things

You have your dress on order, your shoes picked out, and your Quinceanera theme is coming together beautifully. Now it’s time to beautify your pretty fingernails! There are some truly hot trends out there in polish and nail art, and they’re all beautiful, but not all of them will work for an elegant Quinceanera look. So we’ve put together a guide that starts with what not to put on your nails and then reviews the most gorgeous manicures out there that will make you one classy Quinceanera!

Let’s Start with the Absolute No-No’s:

 • Just Say No to Uñas Sinaloenses and Gyaru

As cute and fancy as they may seem, these manicures just do not work. Not only are they outrageously overpriced, but they will seriously downgrade your look. And in spite of how expensive they are, they can actually make you look cheap!

If you’re seriously in love with the look and just have to have it, then get just one nail done and leave the rest of your nails a one solid neutral color.

 • Ho-Hum Old-Fashioned Natural French Tip

Yes, this look is a classic, but the pink and white—or nude and white—just doesn’t cut in in 2016. But what does rock is the French tip style in either a dark or bright color then add a metallic tip!

 • Stiletto Nails are So Last Year!

Never mind Rihanna and everyone else—if you want super-long nails, try the new coffin shape or the traditional square end.

Hot Visual Trends We Love

Here are some manicures that give a visually textured look without the overdone gyura trinkets:

 • Broken & Shattered Glass

This beautiful design is an attention getter in all the right ways.

 • Marble

Who wouldn’t love marble? Especially if you’re having a marble cake, consider a marble design on just one nail to add some personality without overpowering your total look.

 • Floral designs

Celebrate the season of your Quince with one or two nails hand painted with a floral. For the winter holidays, you could do a poinsettia, for spring add a daisy, and any time of the year would be beautiful with a rose in your favorite color.

Add Glamor with a Textured Finish

Perhaps the easiest way to glam up your nails without a pricey design job is to choose any shade you love in one of the new textures:

 • Velvet

Velvet polish adds texture to your nails without being over the top. This polish is lovely if you embellish just one nail with a rhinestone or two.

 • Matte

Shiny gel is out. Matte is in. This new trend will intensify any color you choose and is also lovely with just the faintest touch of glitz.

Update the Tried & True

 • Metallic Tip French

As we said before, the classic French style with a contrasting tip is lovely. Just go for something more exciting like a lighter base and darker tips, or combine a dark color base and a lighter color tip. And a soft shade with a metallic tip? Stunning!

Some Pointers on Choosing the Right Color

Just like with your dress, skin tone matters when it comes to choosing nail polish. Here are some general guidelines that you may already know, but keep them in mind if you choose a multi-colored look:

 • Porcelain & Pale Skin: Choose light pink or light blue, pastels, and gentle reds. Avoid dark colors especially dark blue and black.
 • Light Skin: Choose beige, low-contrast French manicures, light purple, soft orange, dark pink, and berry red. Avoid green, orange, gold, dark blue, and black.
 • Tanned Skin: Choose light blue, pink, purple, light brown, tangerine, copper, and chocolate but stay away from gold.
 • Medium & Olive Skin Tone: Peach, gold, brown, burgundy, metallics, pink, blue, yellow and orange will look great on you. Stay away from certain reds, purple, bronze and navy blue.
 • Dark Complexion: Choose burgundy, deep purple, almost any red, dark green, blue, or gold. Avoid orange, yellow, neon colors, pastels, white and silver.

Because every skin tone can wear at least one shade of red, check out this guide for reds based on skin tone. The blog also lists specific brands and shade names to check out the next time you go to the mall: http://www.makeup.com/best-red-nail-polish-for-skin-tone/?utm_campaign=organic_syndicated&utm_term=Guide&utm_content=Nail-Polish-Guide-The-Very-Best-Reds-for-Your-Skin-Tone%2F&utm_source=Pinterest&utm_medium=social&crlt.pid=camp.rXcVF0jogK6i

Just for Fun

If you want to have some fun shopping Pinterest looks, check out these manicure keywords:

 • Chevron accent
 • Cotton candy
 • Florals
 • Black & white feathers
 • Geometric
 • Gold studs
 • Rainbow polka dots
 • Sophisticated lace
 • Celestial (stars, comet)
 • Reflective French
 • Blue ombre
 • Total glitter (glitter polish)
 • Princess crowns
 • Quilted
 • Royal purple glitter

Some Final Tips for Healthy Nails

 • Skip the acrylics & grow your own

We realize that artificial nails are an easy out, but they’re also expensive and will damage your cuticles.

 • Prep your nails ahead of time

Shop around for a good vitamin and mineral supplement to help strengthen your nails. You can also buy a replenishing oil or a formula that either thickens or prevents splitting. There are plenty of treatments to choose from that will make your nails healthy, and the results will last far longer than your Quinceanera day!

 • Diet matters!

Be sure to include proteins like fish and beans, and also antioxidants like those found in blueberries. A diet rich in these elements will give your nails a lift from the inside.

 • Consider predesigned tips & appliques

You can get a pricey salon look with store-bought tips and appliques. For a fraction of the cost of a salon job, these are a great accessory to add a little glamor and are super easy to apply. Be sure to use a top coat on both tips and appliques to make them last longer.

 • DIY Swarovski crystals & glitter—sparingly!

Obviously, you want your manicure to stand out, especially if your family is giving you a beautiful ring, but the last thing you want is to look tacky. So if you want Swarovski crystals, use just a few of them on only one or two fingers, but not all your nails.

And if you’re a glitter girl through and through, but want something a little different, then consider a glitter ombre manicure.

The post Your Guide to the Top 6 Quinceanera Hairdo’s for 2016 first appeared on Q By DaVinci Blog.

]]>
Long before you walk down the aisle to get married, you’ll walk down the aisle of your church for your Quinceanera Mass. And just like on your wedding day, all eyes will be on you, so you want to look your best, head to toe. You’ll have a tiara crowning your hair instead of a veil, but you want that tiara to rest on the most beautiful hairdo you’ve ever had.

Quinceanera hairdo trends follow closely on the heels of current wedding hairstyles. Sometimes Quinceanera updo’s are more elaborate than wedding styles, but even if you decide to keep your look simple, choosing the hairstyle for your big day is still an important decision. Whether you hire a professional stylist or ask a close friend or relative to do your hair, you’ll still need to make sure your hairstyle suits your dress and flatters your facial features. So let’s take a look at today’s hottest hairstyle trends and see which one will be perfect for your 2016 Quinceanera celebration!

 • Bun

Recently, buns have been trending, and celebrities are wearing braided buns and half buns to special events. Buns are perfect if you have long hair and either want to show off that lovely sweetheart neckline of your gown or just keep your hair off your shoulders because your Quinceanera falls during the warmer months. Even if your hair is short, buns are adaptable to almost any length and type of hair and are especially lovely if you have highlights.

The one downside to a bun that’s more structured is that you might need to touch it up more often, but that just gives you the perfect excuse to wear that gorgeous hair comb or set of crystal spin pins, doesn’t it? Also, a high bun is perfect to show off your beautiful Quinceanera tiara.

As a general guideline, necklines that go well with buns include boat neck, high collar styles like a Queen Anne neckline, as well as off the shoulder and strapless gowns. But because the basic bun has dozens of variations to choose from, and because a bun does work very well with almost everyone’s hair, the final decision comes down to what you want for your total look.

 • Loose Updo

Loose updos have been trending as “messy” hairdo’s and are perfect if you want a dressy look that requires fewer touchups than a fixed style like a bun. This type of hairstyle is a snap if you have wavy hair, and is perfect to show off any number of gorgeous accessories. Adding a little bouffant lift to the crown will also beautifully highlight your tiara.

This style of hairdo will play up highlights, both natural and created. So if you color your hair, make sure to have a touch up a few weeks before your Quinceanera day. Loose updos are fun to play around with to see how loose or structured you prefer. Also, have some fun experimenting with curls at the ends or as side tendrils.

 • Side Swept Hairstyles

Side hairdos, both updos and those with hair down, are wonderful to balance out asymmetrical dress necklines and highlight beautiful shoulders. If you prefer a more bohemian vibe, try a side swept fishtail braid.

Any side swept hairdo will probably need a little retouching every few hours so pack your emergency kit with plenty hairspray and pins. Also, this hairstyle works a bit better for indoor Quinceaneras because unless you’re comfortable using a lot of pins and hairspray, the wind can sometimes wreak havoc.

Tip: Check out this DIY tutorial for a stunning side fishtail pony. https://www.bloglovin.com/blogs/kassinka-11310925/festive-side-ponytail-hair-tutorial-4673665157

 • Quinceanera Styles for Short Hair

If you think that shorter hair gives you fewer options, think again! Short curly hair with lots of volume is wonderful to work with, and short hair that’s straighter can be stunning when styled in a sleek ‘do. Short hairstyles work well with most necklines including an illusion, a bateau, or even a halter.

Perhaps the best thing about shorter hair is that you can usually pat sleek hair back into place and use just your fingers to fluff the curls, making it perfect for any indoor or outdoor Quinceanera and especially for those hot summer months!

 • Ponytails

Find all these ponytail hairdos here: http://stayglam.com/beauty/elegant-ponytail-hairstyles/2/

Ponytails are perfect for any venue, and most will last straight through from the beginning of your Mass until you wave goodbye to the last guest leaving the reception. All it takes to make a ponytail elegant and glamorous is a little backcombing and few strategic hairpins or bobby pins. An occasional touch up with hairspray is probably all you’ll need.

If your hair is long, try a half pony with side braids. This look is beautiful with V and cowl necklines. If you want to experiment more, a fishtail braided pony makes for a charming princess look.

Check out this tutorial on how to make any ponytail look awesome in only 5 minutes! http://www.mindblowingvideos.com/how-come-i-never-knew-this-i-have-been-tying-my-hair-the-wrong-way-all-this-while.html?h=1

Trending now is the bubble ponytail, a look inspired by the designer Valentino for a runway show. You can keep it simple, or you can spice it up with braids and hair accessories. Here’s a link to a DIY tutorial for a braid wrapped bubble ponytail plus 14 other gorgeous styles:

 • Let Your Hair Down

If you’re not keen on wearing your hair up for whatever reason, then just let your lovely locks hang loose! Long or short, down hairdos go beautifully with tube top dresses as well as any gown that has simple lines and a lightly embellished bodice. They can also be dramatic with a V-neck dress. For alluring elegance, add gentle waves. For a hip feel, part your hair slightly off center and add a few curls down the sides.

Some girls also prefer a down hairdo with a strapless or off the shoulder dress because they feel more comfortable having a bit of their shoulders covered.

Depending on the length of your hair and whether it’s curly or straight, you may need a few quick fixes, especially after the choreographed dances and for sure at the height of the dance party.

Hint: Why not pack a few bobby pins, a ponytail holder, or some other comb or clip in your emergency kit? Then if you decide at some point to get your hair out of your way, you can put it up in a snap!

Final Tip: Grow It, Fake It or Extend It

Many celebrants choose to grow their hair out especially for their Quinceanera in order to have more styling options and to make whatever style they already prefer all the more glamorous. If growing your hair out isn’t an option—perhaps if you simply prefer your hair shorter, or you’re planning your Quinceanera at the last minute—there are plenty of choices to make your hairdo more dramatic.

You can sweep any length hair up into a high ponytail or bun then add a faux bun to make a bouffant look. You could purchase some quality clip-in extensions, maybe in a color to complement your dress, or you could go with some type of more customized hair extension.

Important: While hair extensions can be a fantastic option, make sure you research carefully and check with your parents first. Read this link for some excellent professional advice: http://www.hairextensions.com/clip_in_hair_extensions.html

Practice, Practice!

Many of the hairstyles trending today for Quinceaneras and other dressy events are really easy to DIY, but you’ll still need to practice. Professional stylists can give you some pointers, but be sure to check with your parents before you plan anything like extensions or expensive highlights or even a style that will make you look drastically different from your everyday self.

Also, plan at least a couple of full practice sessions with your dress, hair, and makeup so that on the big day, everything goes smoothly. Remember, too: You do not have to copy a celebrity hairstyle or buy pricey extensions or do anything else radical to your hair in order to look beautiful for your Quinceanera. Enhancing and bringing out your inner beauty through lovely, age appropriate hair and makeup is what really counts!

If there’s anything about Quinceanera that must be perfect, it’s—well, it’s you! You’re the star, the centerpiece of the celebration. This is your chance to shine and the chance for your family and friends to watch you change from a little girl to a stunning young lady, right before their eyes. Of course, your dress is important, but beautiful and youthful makeup is, too. Every moment of your special day will be captured on film and in the video, so while you do want to look “all grown up,” you don’t want to look a decade older! So let’s talk about what goes into glamorous, gorgeous Quinceanera makeup that’s just right for you!

 • Keep It Youthful

Before you even think about pinning that amazing eyeshadow look or that out of this world lipstick color, remember this keyword: Youthful. You want your personal beauty to shine though, not be hidden under layers of foundation, contouring and, well, goop! Remember too, especially if you’re celebrating a Quinceanera Mass before your reception, you want to project an air of respect and modesty. Probably the best tip we could give you is to look at “natural” makeup styles for brides as a starting point, then add your favorite flashy Quinceanera eyeshadow look and perhaps a lipstick color that really pops.

 • Know Your Skin Type, Skin Tone & Facial Features

Knowing the best kind of makeup look for your Quinceanera requires you to really know your face. Let’s have a look at 3 key factors:

 • Skin Type

To do this easy test, click here:

There’s a better reason that Quinceaneras are often planned a year in advance than just picking out the perfect place setting: You need time to get your skin into its best possible condition.

If you’re not sure of your skin type, or if you need help establishing a good skin care regimen, you have lots of options. You can scout the internet for links to self-help skin analysis tutorials or go to a good makeup artist or esthetician. If you feel your skin needs more attention, or you know for sure you need some help with breakouts or troublesome skin condition, visit a dermatologist.

You could even ask your parents if, instead of the pricier tiara or fancier dress, they would pay for you to visit a professional to learn how to take really good care of your skin. You can be sure they’ll be proud of you for asking for something that will really last: A beautiful, healthy complexion!

Tip: If you want a truly detailed analysis, check out this link: https://www.yahoo.com/beauty/whats-your-myers-briggs-skin-type-191230178.html?soc_src=social-sh&soc_trk=pi

 • Skin Tone

You may already have a pretty good idea of which makeup colors look good on you and which absolutely do not. For instance, maybe you borrowed your friend’s raspberry nail color or lipstick—that totally rocks on her—only to find out it looks totally weird on you. Or you thought that beautiful persimmon orange blush would be great—but it either stood out on your face like clown paint or disappeared completely. Those are clues that you either have a yellow undertone to your skin (which is why the raspberry didn’t work) or blue undertones (so now you stay away from orange).

Most girls fall into 3 major skin tone categories: Cool, Warm, and Neutral. But there are variations on these, and there is always an exception to the rule. And if there’s one day in your life when you absolutely must wear the right colors for your skin tone, it’s your Quinceanera!

Important: You really need to know the best colors for your skin tone before you go shopping for your dress!

So do a little research. Look online for ideas on how to find your skin tone, and also give serious consideration to getting a free makeover from a makeup artist at your local department store. She’ll be able to tell you, pretty much right off the bat, your exact skin shade, your undertone, and what colors will look fabulous on you and which colors to stay away from.

Tip: Here’s a fun, free color analysis to help you find your best colors. http://www.colormepretty.co/categories-2/4-season-color-analysis/

 • Highlight Your Best Facial Features

Check out the tutorial for this method here: http://bellashoot.tumblr.com/post/135060011716/dot-to-dot-highlighter-contour-blush-on

Once again, your local department store makeup artist may be your best helper when it comes to balancing your features by contouring or strobing (the new technique that uses only highlighter). You need to know which features you want to play up, and which features you want to correct.

If you’re overly conscious about your nose that you feel is a little crooked, or your cheeks that seem too full, then a little contouring will definitely help. If you just love your eyes but feel that your lips are too thin, then learn how to play up your eye makeup and also find lipstick tricks to make your lips look plumper.

While hiring a professional makeup artist for your Quinceanera can be of tremendous value, don’t let him or her make all the decisions for you. Learn enough to be able to give your own suggestions.

 • Shop for Looks You Like

Now that you have an idea of what colors look best and which features you want to play up, it’s time to look for makeup styles that you like. Choose 4 or 5 pegs and add notes on specific details that you like, then visit a makeup artist for ideas. You don’t need to find a photo of the one perfect face with all the details you want. Just collect a handful of the looks that most appeal to you, like maybe the flirty fake lashes in one look and the dewy highlighting in another.

And while you might not have all these details included in your personal Quinceanera makeup look—because using everything might be overwhelming—at least you’ll have a pretty good idea of what elements appeal to you. Then you and your makeup artist can decide which ones to prioritize.

 • Invest in Waterproof & Sweatproof Makeup

Your Quinceanera is a party, which means there will be a lot of moving and grooving—and probably a little crying once in a while, like when you dance with you dad or your favorite padrino makes a speech.

The last thing you want is for your makeup to run or blotch, so make a special note to tell your makeup artist to use only waterproof and sweatproof makeup. If you’re going to DIY, read labels very carefully. Not only will you not have to worry about happy tears or lively dancing, but you’ll also need fewer touch-ups. Then you can have fun without worrying about raccoon eyes or that your face is starting to look shiny for all those candid professional photos and selfies with friends.

Also, don’t forget to factor in the weather and where you’ll have your reception. If your Quinceanera party is an outdoor fiesta, you might need greater sweat-proof protection. If it’s indoors in air-conditioning, a little moisturizer can help keep your face looking dewy and young and not develop those little fine lines due to powdered makeup creasing from your skin drying. Maybe worse than shiny skin, the last thing you want is “fine lines” when you’re only 15!

 • Consider HD Makeup

HD makeup (high definition) is all the rage now. The advances in technology can make photos and videos so sharp that you can practically see every pore! HD makeup is a special formulation that scatters light and makes your skin look flawless and smooth even when projected on HD screens and monitors. It’s a must that you try out HD makeup early on to make sure you don’t have a reaction and to find out which shades are best.

Tip: You might find that clear HD powder alone—used over your regular foundation—is enough to scatter the light. You can always do a few selfies to see how it works. You might even like the clear powder enough for everyday use if it doesn’t look too heavy!

 • Prep Ahead for Gorgeous Skin

The best face to make gorgeous with makeup is a clean face—by “clean” we mean smooth, bump free skin with very few dark spots or blotches—and that’s not something you can achieve overnight. It will take you at least several weeks to condition your skin to make it look its natural best on the day of your Quinceanera.

So treat your skin like a princess would. Get good advice on a skin care regimen and visit a dermatologist especially if you have stubborn acne or sensitive skin that’s prone to allergic reactions or other unpleasant issues. Get into the habit of getting enough sleep now so come Quinceanera day, you’ll have less risk of dark circles or puffy eyes. Eat healthily and exercise, not just for your figure, but also to make your skin glow. And don’t forget those eight glasses of water a day. Water helps flush toxins and helps to keep your skin hydrated.

 • Confidence is Always Beautiful!

At the end of the day, the best kind of makeup for your Quinceanera is one that lets your natural beauty shine through. You may have some trouble spots covered up and some features like your beautiful cheekbones highlighted, but you still want to look like yourself—your most beautiful self.

They say beauty is only skin deep and in many ways that’s true. What really makes a woman truly beautiful is confidence. So take these months and weeks before your Quinceanera to learn as much as you can. Then you’ll have confidence that you’re the best Quinceanera you can be!

These days, Quinceaneras are a lot like weddings when it comes to preparation and celebration. Just like a bride on her wedding day, you as the celebrant also want to stand out and look fabulous. One of the biggest details common to both two celebrations is hairstyles. And again, just like brides, while some Quinceaneras are really busy and decide to rely on their professional hair stylist to choose the style and embellishments, others want to add their own personalized touch. So if you have the time, why not DIY your Quinceanera hairdo for your big day?

Be sure to allow enough time to decide how you want to style and accessorize your hair. Starting a few months before your Quinceanera day, begin researching pins and scouting hair magazines at your local salon. Check out popular magazines for the latest hairstyles of celebrities you admire, then look for video tutorials on how to create and master the looks you like best. Ask your mom or your sister—and for sure your damas—for tips and tricks they might know when it comes to hair. Scout your local beauty supply store and ask for advice on any special hair products you might need so that once you start practicing everything goes smoothly.

Here are some tips and tricks for fun and fashionable hairstyles and accessories that never go out style. A lot of these looks are something you can adapt for special occasions before your Quinceanera like church or a school dance, so you’ll have plenty of chances to practice. Then, come Quinceanera day, doing your hair will be a breeze!

 • Flowers: Combs, Wreaths and Tuck In’s

Whether you want to wear your hair down, in a bun, or in a super easy half-up hairdo, a few flowers would be lovely. A floral wreath can be taken off when it’s time to put on your tiara, while both a floral comb and tiny flowers or baby’s breath tucked into your hairdo can stay throughout the festivities.

For the longest lasting look, choose dried or silk flowers rather than fresh flowers that will wilt from the heat of your scalp. (The one exception to this rule is fresh baby’s breath—it’ll hold up the entire day and beyond!) Choose colors to match your theme, and also tuck some of the silk flowers you choose for your hair into your bouquet and even your centerpieces for a pretty touch of continuity. Once again, this is where baby’s breath comes in handy because it’ll work anywhere—even dried baby’s breath in the bouquet you leave at the altar during the Mass.

Three important tips:

 • Use hairspray and hairpins or bobby pins to lock the flowers in place.
 • Even with silk flowers, choose those that are in season in order to match the rest of your decorations.
 • Don’t overdo it. Keep the blooms in a wreath small, use just a decorated comb or two, and don’t overwhelm you look—scatter the tiny flowers or baby’s breath only in a few places.

Here’s a link for even more ideas for adding flowers to your Quince hairstyle: http://www.seventeen.com/beauty/hair/g474/Quinceanera-updo-with-flowers/?slide=2

 • Triple Braided Bun

This gorgeous look can be accented with flowers. If you like braids, this is an easy look because there are only a few steps involved. You just section the hair, braid each piece, make a knot, secure it in place, and repeat.

Here’s a link for directions on how to create this stunning but simple look: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/418553359099967569/

 • Short & Sweet

Who said that short hair has fewer styling options? There are plenty of trendy styles to choose from. You can go simple with some mousse and hairspray and a pretty accessory, or you can create a very elegant messy mini bun.

If you wear your hair in a short bob, try a Dutch braid, also known as a summer braid. You just braid the sides and pin them at the back. Add a sparkly accessory to secure the side braids in place. A healthy dose of hairspray is also recommended.

Here’s a tutorial for this hairdo that’s a lot easier than it looks! http://thebeautydepartment.com/2014/07/summer-braid-4/

 • Heart Bun

This hairstyle is too pretty for words. If your Quince falls in “the love month” of February, or you want to go with a heart theme for your Quince, carry the theme into your hair! A heart bun will look lovely with a sweetheart neckline and is stunning for a strapless or off the shoulder dress. If you’re blessed with volume and natural curls, this look will be easy for you. All you need is bobby pins, 2 ponytail holders, a comb and a curling wand if you want it.

Here’s the detailed tutorial: http://thebeautydepartment.com/2014/02/the-heart-bun/.

 • Low Bun

If your Quinceanera falls during one of the hot summer months, try a simple bun that’s made from several loops. A low bun will keep your hair off your shoulders and is perfect for tucking in a stunning comb, a few crystal spin pins, or some tiny flowers. It really is as simple as it looks. All it takes is clear elastic ponytail holders, bobby pins, and hair spray.

Hint: There are 2 tricks to this hairstyle.

 1. Figure out how full to make the front sections, so they sweep to the back the way you want.
 2. To make Step #2 easier, use a ponytail pull-through tool like a Topsy Tail: http://www.ulta.com/topsy-tail-kit?productId=xlsImpprod4160085
 • Half-Bouffant

The 1960s was a unique era fashion-wise, and it’s not popular with everyone. However, full bouffant hairdo’s and variations such as half-up are a hot trend in weddings that are also stunning for a Quinceanera. Pretty much any hair decoration will work, anything from floral wreaths to crystal combs to scads of baby’s breath or sparkly spin pins. So if you find a little touch of backcombing to be a nice fashion comeback (pun intended!), but a full bouffant feels like too much, consider a half-bouffant.

The bouffant technique is pretty simple. All it involves is a little backcombing, which can also be done with a brush for a softer effect. Here’s a great tutorial for a half-bouffant technique (end result shown in the photo above) that’s simple enough to wear to school if you want: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/28921622580960982/

Long or Short, You’ll Look Lovely!

There are literally hundreds of hairstyle variations you can also try out, so pick one you want then practice until it’s perfect every time.

The post DIY Master Makeup Tricks: 11 Looks for Your Quinceañera first appeared on Q By DaVinci Blog.

A Quinceañera is a wonderful way to celebrate the birthday of a young woman ready to take on the challenges of being a woman. It can be a big deal for your relatives, too, especially if it’s a family tradition. One of your top priorities is looking your best for your Quince, but as a teenager, that can create a lot of pressure.

You can have full control over how you’ll look on your 15th birthday, though. Following a healthy diet and skin care regimen will bring out your best glow and lay the foundation for beautiful Quinceanera makeup. And one of the best ways to guarantee that you’ll look good is to DIY. That way you have full control, plus it’s fun, and the tips you learn will come in handy far into the future.

Here are 11 DIY makeup tips that can help you achieve the perfect Quinceañera look:

 • Highlight Your Collarbones

Your face isn’t the only part of your skin that can benefit from a little makeup. You’ll already be wearing a beautiful gown, so why not enhance your look by highlighting your collarbone? This gives it a lovely soft edge to your photos and may make you look slimmer.

You’ll need:

 • Bronzer
 • Highlighter
 • Makeup blending brush
 1. Using highlighter, make a stripe in a wide V right on top of your collarbone.
 2. Add a narrower V right in the middle of the first two lines from your lower neck to just above the first V.
 3. Apply dark bronzer above and below the highlighted collarbone lines. This creates deeper hollows.
 4. Blend well until your collarbones are the most prominent part of your decolette.
 • Add Fake Lashes

Here’s how to apply false eyelashes for a more dramatic look.

You’ll need:

 • False lashes
 • Q-tip (cut in half)
 • Eyeliner brush
 • Eyelash adhesive glue
 • Mini scissors
 1. First, trim the excess part of the false lashes after measuring how much you’ll need for your lid. Here’s a quick guide and link:
 2. Using the eyeliner brush, apply eyelash adhesive glue to the upper edge of your lash line.
 3. Attach the fake lashes just above your real lashes.
 4. Using the end of the Q-tip, secure the position of the fake lashes to perfectly surround your eyelid.
 5. Finish by applying a bit of your favorite mascara
 • Make your Luscious Lipstick Last

Lipstick doesn’t always last as long as you’d like, so here’s one way to keep it bright the whole night without worrying about too many touch-ups.

You will need:

 • Lip balm
 • Lipstick
 • Foundation or primer
 • Powder
 • Sheet of tissue
 1. Moisturize your lips by applying a moderate amount of lip balm.
 2. If you don’t have lip primer, use a small amount of foundation or neutral eye primer and apply with brush or finger.
 3. Apply your first coat of lipstick.
 4. Blot your lips with a sheet of tissue.
 5. Dust your lips with powder.
 6. Add the second coat of lipstick.
 • Contouring

This is one of the most popular tricks of the trade! Contouring not only makes your face appear slimmer but it’ll also highlight your cheekbones and your nose beautifully in photos.

You will need:

 • Primer
 • Bronzer
 • Angled brush
 • Foundation / Highlight brush
 • Highlighter or Illuminator
 1. Cleanse and moisturize your face.
 2. Apply primer followed by foundation over your entire face.
 3. Identify the parts of your face that the light doesn’t hit: The upper portion of the forehead near the hairline, below the cheekbones, the sides of the nose and the chin.
 4. Using the angled brush, apply bronzer to these areas. Careful: Be sure to take it easy with bronzer on the nose else it can look dirty.
 5. Use the other brush to apply highlighter to the parts of your face which the light does hit: Front part of the forehead, the upper part of the eyelid near the brows, the tip of the nose upwards, above the cheekbones, and the Cupid ’s bow above the lips.
 6. Blend well, then add blush

Note: the illustration below is non-blended blush positioning.

 • Strobing

Strobing is much easier to do than contouring. You can brighten your face in less time and with less makeup.

 1. Cleanse and moisturize your face before you begin.
 2. Apply primer and foundation over your entire face.
 3. Add stripes of highlighter according to the diagram below, then blend well.

That’s all it takes!

 • Smoky Eye

This is an easy way to add drama and is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it.

Hint: You can use the Smoky Eye look with a much lighter application for just about any dressy occasion!

You will need:

 • Large shadow brush
 • Blending tip brush
 • Eyeliner
 • Mascara
 1. Use the large shadow brush to apply a neutral shade—pink, brown, or beige only—all over the lid.
 2. Add a second layer of gray eyeshadow from lashline to just above the crease. It must be darker than the first shade.
 3. Using a blending tip brush, apply gray eyeshadow in a V on the outside of the upper lid. You can use a darker shade than the 1st gray.
 4. Apply eyeliner to the lash line for better definition.
 5. Apply highlighter to the inner corner of the eyelid. Blend in horizontally. You can also apply eyeliner on the lower lash line.
 6. Finish off with your mascara and you’re all set!
 • Define Your Brows

It’s important for brows to be well-defined when wearing formal makeup both because it completes the look and because your brows can “get lost” behind the beautiful eye and face makeup. Here’s a basic tutorial that you’ll find handy for years:

You will need:

 • Eyebrow pencil
 • Slanted liner or any eyebrow brush
 • Spoolie – here’s a picture:
 1. Outline your brows with an eyebrow pencil. Be very precise. You don’t want to make them look bigger, just add fullness.
 2. Use a precise brow brush and fill in the in brows with little strokes of color, like your drawing in individual eyebrow hairs. Use your favorite eyebrow products, or if preferred, use eye shadow in a shade that matches your brows.
 3. Finish it off by using the eyebrow pencil to define the edges and the spoolie to brush the brows.
 • Wear Super-Bright Eyeshadow

Your Quinceanera is the one day you don’t have to hold back or tone it down. You can choose a bright color that either matches or complements your dress or do a peacock or opal effect with layers of bright metallic. Here’s a quick guide for easy bright shadow as the main focus:

You will need:

 • Eyeshadow palette
 • Eye shadow brushes
 • Highlighter
 • Eyeliner
 1. Apply a peach or pink colored eye shadow to the entire crease. (Hint: You can pretty much follow the Smoky Eye look, just using brighter shadow.)
 2. Choose blue or turquoise shadow for the outer crease and lid areas and apply it.
 3. Apply gold or silver shadow on the inner lid and blend towards the middle of the lid.
 4. Highlight the brow bone.
 5. Put a bit of eyeliner on the upper lash line.
 • Ombre Lips

This is a relatively new technique in the makeup world but it is stunning once you get the hang of it.

You will need:

 • Nude lipstick
 • Lip liner
 • Lipstick brush
 • Dark colored lipstick
 • Bright colored lipstick
 • Pink lipstick (matte)
 • Lip gloss
 1. Apply a nude shade of lipstick all over.
 2. Line your lips with a dark liner or a lipstick brush and a dark shade of red.
 3. Apply bright red or pink lipstick all over including over the liner.
 4. Use a matte pink lipstickto coat your inner lips.
 5. Blot lips with a tissue then reapply liner.
 6. Finish off with a slick of lip gloss.

Tip: Use a lip brush to apply gloss both for control and to not smear the look.

 • Winged Eyeliner

Perfectly winged eyeliner is all the rage it’s challenging. But here’s a hack that can help:

You will need:

 • Liquid eyeliner
 • A very steady hand
 1. Start by tracing your upper lash line from the inner to outer corner.
 2. At the end, draw an upward wing.
 3. Draw a line from the upward line towards the inner corner of the eye. It should look like a modified triangle
 4. Fill in the lines with the liquid liner being careful not to smudge or color outside the lines.

Tip: It helps to use your other hand to gently stretch the eyelid from the outer edge toward your ear.

 • Upside Down Cat Eye

This is totally different but creates an amazing effect.

You will need:

 • Bright or shimmery eye shadow
 • Eyeliner
 • Precision liner brush
 1. Apply eyeshadow from the crease down including the inner corner.
 2. Apply eyeliner on the lower lash line only from inner to outer corner.
 3. Add a wing at the outer corner.
 4. Using a precision liner brush, perfect the wing by giving it a thin ending point.
 5. Use eyeliner to darken and define the lower lash line.
 6. Line the waterline on the lower lash line

This can be a really cute look for your younger damas or your little sister, too, because it doesn’t have a lot of heavy color. It’s also great for low-key casual occasions.

Remember: Practice, practice, practice!

Start weeks, even months, before your Quinceañera so you can study what best suits your face. It also helps to practice these different techniques to see which makeup applications best enhance your features.

Final Note: You probably do not want to use every single one of these all at the same time. A fancier lip calls for a simpler eye and vice versa. Use your best judgment. You’ll know what to do!
